Hands-free headlamp is required: smartphone flashlights leave only one hand free for wet 45 cm canal ledges and risk dropping phones into the channel.
Tier 3 · Knife-Edge Abyss
Pedra Rija razorback knife-edge ridge with 400m vertical plunge on both sides; terrifying visual exposure safeguarded by steel cables.
Not recommended for hikers with severe acrophobia or vertigo sensitivity.

PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro is on the IFCN classified-trail table updated on 2 October 2026 and read here on 12 October 2026. The official distance on that table is 6.1 km. The places named there are Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, with the western line through the tunnels and the eastern line via Pico das Torres. The status on that table is split across three operational sections:
- Pico do Areeiro to Miradouro da Pedra Rija: Open in both directions.
- Miradouro da Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo (west line through the tunnels): Open one-way only toward Pico Ruivo.
- East line via Pico das Torres: Closed.
(“Arieiro” is the older spelling of the same peak; official road signs and the IFCN table use Areeiro.) Route Summary: 6.1 km · 3 h 30 min – 4 h 15 min · +510 m / -400 m (1,818 m – 1,862 m) · Hard (Exposed Alpine Ridge) · One-way traverse requires transfer or turnaround at Pedra Rija returns to car. Full details on the three-part status are in Is PR 1 Madeira open?.
Choosing between the Pedra Rija turnaround and the full one-way traverse
Because the western tunnel line beyond Miradouro da Pedra Rija is strictly one-way toward Pico Ruivo, every walker starting at the Pico do Areeiro car park must choose one of two day plans before leaving the trailhead:
- Out-and-back to Miradouro da Pedra Rija (return to your car at Pico do Areeiro): You walk down the stone ridge past the Miradouro do Ninho da Manta balcony to the Pedra Rija viewpoint and return along the same two-way path to your parked vehicle at Pico do Areeiro. This option uses the €4.50 ticket tier.
- One-way traverse to Pico Ruivo plus northern exit (transfer required): Once you pass the Pedra Rija checkpoint onto the western tunnel line toward Pico Ruivo, you cannot walk back to Pico do Areeiro. Because no road reaches Pico Ruivo, you must exit on foot via a connecting trail — usually PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo (2.8 km down to the Achada do Teixeira car park above Santana, making 8.9 km in total) or PR 1.1 Vereda da Ilha (8.2 km down to Ilha). Do not start the one-way section unless you arrived at Pico do Areeiro by bus or taxi, or have arranged a return transfer from Achada do Teixeira back to your car. Compare the two starting car parks in Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo: which trailhead?.
Road access, parking, and public bus at Pico do Areeiro
Pico do Areeiro sits at the end of the ER 202 summit spur off the ER 103 Poiso road. It is the only high-mountain trailhead on Madeira served by both a paved road and a dedicated public bus connection from Funchal.
- Parking: The upper plaza near the radar dome and the lower overflow car park fill well before sunrise on clear mornings. If you park in the lower bays, allow extra walking time up the road link to the trailhead gate.
- Public bus (Line 4A): Horários do Funchal (SIGA) Line 4A provides direct summit bus service from Funchal Teleférico to Pico do Areeiro for €3.00 (cash on board). Departures from Funchal are at 06:00 and 13:30, with return departures from Pico do Areeiro summit at 12:15 and 18:00/19:00. Note that zero public buses serve the opposite end at Achada do Teixeira.
- Taxis and transfers: Taxis wait at Pico do Areeiro and at Achada do Teixeira during peak morning hours, but pre-booking a return transfer is strongly advised if you leave a rental car at one end of the traverse.
Terrain, tunnels, and high-ridge kit
PR 1 is an alpine volcanic ridge walk cut into steep basalt and tuff crags above 1,700 m. Between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, the path crosses narrow ledges guarded by steel cables, steep stone and metal staircases, and multiple unlit rock tunnels on the western line.
- Headlamp or torch: Mandatory for the western tunnel line beyond Pedra Rija, where rock roofs are low and floors can hold puddles after rain.
- Wind and sun protection: The central ridge stands above the forest canopy with zero shade and full exposure to Atlantic gusts and rapid cloud inversions. Pack a windproof shell, warm mid-layer, sun protection, and water for the full crossing.
Before you go
The IFCN fee FAQ lists €4.50 per person to Miradouro da Pedra Rija and back (which does not include Pico Ruivo) and €10.50 per person for the full one-way route from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo. That €10.50 ticket also covers PR 1.1, PR 1.2, and PR 1.3 when PR 1.3 reopens. A Pedra Rija ticket is not upgraded into the full route. Miradouro do Juncal sits on the open public summit plateau outside the PR 1 SIMplifica turnstiles and does not require a €4.50 or €10.50 trail ticket. Residents of the region, children aged 12 or under, and covered disability cases pay €0 and still require a reservation; see PR trail fees and reservation rules on Madeira. This site does not publish a live forecast. Source: Percursos pedestres classificados, table updated 2 October 2026, read here on 12 October 2026. The fee figures are from the IFCN fee FAQ.
