Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo: which trailhead?

Pico do Areeiro and Achada do Teixeira are different starts. PR 1 is 6.1 km with a one-way west line. PR 1.2 is 2.8 km each way and listed open.

Pico do Areeiro and Achada do Teixeira are not two names for the same trailhead, and choosing between them changes your entire day on the mountain. (“Arieiro” is the older spelling of the same peak; official signs and the IFCN table use Areeiro.) Both routes reach the summit area of Pico Ruivo, Madeira's highest peak, but they approach from opposite sides with completely different distances, ticket rules, and car-park logistics. This guide follows the IFCN classified-trail table of 2 October 2026, read here on 12 October 2026. It is a route and logistics brief, not a live webcam.

Option 1: Starting at Pico do Areeiro (PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro)

PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro is the dramatic central-ridge traverse starting from the radar dome car park at Pico do Areeiro on the ER 202 road. On the 2 October 2026 IFCN table, the listed distance is 6.1 km, and its operational status is split into three parts:

  • Pico do Areeiro to Miradouro da Pedra Rija: Open in both directions. You can park at Pico do Areeiro, walk past the Ninho da Manta balcony to Pedra Rija, and walk back to your car on the €4.50 ticket.
  • Miradouro da Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo (west line through the tunnels): Open one-way only toward Pico Ruivo. Once you pass Pedra Rija onto the western tunnel line, you cannot walk back to Pico do Areeiro.
  • East line via Pico das Torres: Closed.

What a full traverse from Pico do Areeiro actually requires

Because the west line from Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo is one-way and no road reaches the summit of Pico Ruivo, every hiker who completes PR 1 must continue down another trail to reach a road — almost always PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo (2.8 km down to the Achada do Teixeira car park above Santana).

  • Total walking distance: 6.1 km on PR 1 + 2.8 km on PR 1.2 = 8.9 km one-way.
  • Transport problem: Pico do Areeiro and Achada do Teixeira sit on different mountain spurs separated by a long drive around the eastern roads via Poiso, Ribeiro Frio, and Santana. Do not walk past Pedra Rija if you left a rental car at Pico do Areeiro unless you have arranged a taxi or transfer back from Achada do Teixeira.
  • Ticket required: The €10.50 full-route PR 1 ticket, which also covers your exit via PR 1.2 (or PR 1.1 to Ilha). A €4.50 Pedra Rija ticket cannot be upgraded on the trail. Full status details are in Is PR 1 Madeira open?.

Option 2: Starting at Achada do Teixeira (PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo)

PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo approaches the summit from the northern car park at Achada do Teixeira above Santana. On the 2 October 2026 IFCN table, PR 1.2 is listed open in both directions at 2.8 km each way (5.6 km round trip).

Why rental-car drivers often choose Achada do Teixeira

  • Simple out-and-back return: You park at Achada do Teixeira, walk 2.8 km up the stone-paved ridge path past the basalt rock formations and ridge shelters to Pico Ruivo, and walk the same 2.8 km back to your car. No taxi transfer or second vehicle is needed.
  • No dark tunnels or cliffside steel ladders: Unlike PR 1, PR 1.2 follows a wide, steadily graded cobbled mountain path without unlit tunnels.
  • Lower fee when walked on its own: Walking PR 1.2 out-and-back from Achada do Teixeira requires the standard €4.50 classified-route ticket rather than the €10.50 full PR 1 traverse ticket. See PR trail fees and reservation rules on Madeira.

Comparing weather and arrival times at the two car parks

The IFCN table does not state that the two trailheads share the same weather. Pico do Areeiro (accessible from Funchal via Poiso and the ER 202, as well as the Funchal mountaintop bus) and Achada do Teixeira (accessible by car or taxi from Santana) sit on opposite sides of the central massif. Northern trade-wind cloud often banks against Achada do Teixeira while Pico do Areeiro stands in sun, or vice versa. Read the northern approach notes in Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo before leaving Santana.
