Classified PR routes vs. unknown trails in Madeira
Classified PR walks follow the IFCN table of 2 October 2026 and its fee schedule. Walks on the unknown-trails index cover regional walking surveys and have no IFCN status.
This site separates Madeira walks into two distinct indexes so an unmaintained local path or municipal levada is never mistaken for an official classified route. Understanding the difference between the 24 classified Percursos Recomendados (PR) and the 120 walks on the unknown trails index is essential for route planning, ticket reservations, and mountain safety.
1. Classified PR routes (the official IFCN network)
The trail briefs and the interactive Madeira hiking map cover the 24 classified Percursos Recomendados published on the official IFCN table updated on 2 October 2026 and read here on 12 October 2026 — including flagship routes such as PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro, PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo, PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes, PR 8 Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço, and PR 9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde.
Every classified PR brief on this site follows four strict rules:
- Official segment status and distance: Distances and open, one-way, partly open, or closed lines come directly from the IFCN table of 2 October 2026. When a route is split into open and closed sections — such as PR 1, PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada, PR 12 Caminho Real da Encumeada, or PR 17 Caminho do Pináculo e Folhadal — each segment is mapped and labelled individually.
- Dated car-park check with 14-day expiry: Each classified route includes an interactive starting-car-park check verified on 12 October 2026 that expires after 14 days unless re-verified, showing whether you return to your car or finish at another road requiring a transfer.
- IFCN reservation and fee schedule: Classified PR routes require advance reservation and carry the official fee from the IFCN fee FAQ (€4.50 per classified route, or €10.50 for the full one-way PR 1 traverse covering PR 1.1, PR 1.2, and PR 1.3). See PR trail fees and reservation rules on Madeira.
- Verified route statistics: Because the 2 October 2026 IFCN table lists route code, name, distance, and status without printing duration, elevation gain, or difficulty grades, those three fields are complemented with verified route statistics (duration, elevation gain/loss, and difficulty grades). Classified PR routes that follow a historic levada also include the channel's water intake (Madre), terminus (Fim), full channel length, local alias names, and field photographs.
2. Unknown trails (unclassified regional paths & levadas)
The unknown trails index records 120 Madeira walks that appear in regional levada surveys and mountain path records but are absent from the IFCN classified PR table — including well-known local routes such as Vereda do Larano, Levada do Moinho and Levada Nova, Ponta do Sol, Levada da Ribeira da Janela, Pico Grande from Boca da Corrida, Levada dos Piornais, and Cascata da Garganta Funda.
On every unknown-trail page:
- Route statistics and channel figures are labelled clearly: Distance, difficulty, walking time, climb, tunnel count, and endpoints are recorded from first-party GPS recordings and hydraulic channel surveys. When a hydraulic channel survey records water intake (Madre), terminus (Fim), and channel length without printing a walking time, difficulty grade, or elevation in metres, those unprinted fields remain explicitly marked Not printed rather than guessed. For levada routes, the page also records local alias names, historical engineering notes, and field photographs along the channel.
- No IFCN maintenance or status guarantee: IFCN does not maintain, patrol, or publish open/closed bulletins for these 120 routes, and does not recommend them as part of the classified PR network.
- Outside the PR fee schedule: Because they are not classified PR routes, they do not appear on the IFCN €4.50 / €10.50 fee table.
- Kept off the classified map: To prevent hikers from confusing an unmaintained cliff path or water-tunnel maintenance ledge with a signposted PR trail, unknown trails are excluded from the classified hiking map and carry a distinct Not listed badge across the site.
How to choose between a classified PR and an unclassified walk
If you want signposted trailheads, maintained wire railings, official open/closed verification, and clear car-park return logistics, choose from the 24 routes on the classified trails index. Many unclassified walks follow working irrigation and hydroelectric channels with unlit, narrow tunnels, unguarded coastal drop-offs, or overgrown forest steps where rockfalls go unreported. Always check equipment guidance in What to carry on a levada before leaving the road.
