Is PR 1 Madeira open?

PR 1 is open both ways from Pico do Areeiro to Pedra Rija. The west line to Pico Ruivo is one-way. The east line via Pico das Torres is closed. IFCN table of 2 October 2026.

The IFCN classified-trail table updated on 2 October 2026 and read here on 12 October 2026 does not treat PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro as a simple all-open or all-closed route. Instead, the 6.1 km central ridge trail between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo is divided into three distinct operational segments with different directional and access rules:

  1. Pico do Areeiro to Miradouro da Pedra Rija: Listed open in both directions. Hikers can walk out from the Pico do Areeiro car park past Miradouro do Ninho da Manta to the Pedra Rija viewpoint (just before the famous narrow ridge staircase) and walk back to their car at Pico do Areeiro.
  2. Miradouro da Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo (west line through the tunnels): Listed open one-way only from Pedra Rija toward Pico Ruivo. Once you pass the Pedra Rija gate onto this western tunnel and cliff-ledge line, you cannot turn around and walk back toward Pico do Areeiro.
  3. East line via Pico das Torres: Listed closed. The eastern variant around Pico das Torres remains shut and must not be entered.

What the one-way rule means for your car and return transfer

Because the west line beyond Miradouro da Pedra Rija is strictly one-way toward Pico Ruivo, starting the full PR 1 traverse commits you to finishing on a different side of the mountain:

  • You cannot return to a car parked at Pico do Areeiro on foot once you continue past Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo.
  • Your exit from Pico Ruivo is via PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo, a 2.8 km descent from the Pico Ruivo summit refuge to the northern car park at Achada do Teixeira above Santana (or via the longer 8.2 km PR 1.1 Vereda da Ilha down to Ilha).
  • Combined walking distance: Walking the 6.1 km one-way PR 1 line from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo plus the 2.8 km PR 1.2 exit to Achada do Teixeira totals 8.9 km of mountain walking across high-altitude stairs, tunnels, and exposed ridges.
  • Arrange transport before passing Pedra Rija: If you drive a rental car to Pico do Areeiro and only want a return walk to your vehicle, turn back at Miradouro da Pedra Rija. Only continue to Pico Ruivo if you arrived at Pico do Areeiro by taxi, bus, or shuttle, or have a pre-arranged pickup waiting at Achada do Teixeira. Ticket tiers: €4.50 vs €10.50 on the IFCN fee FAQ

The IFCN fee FAQ sets a specific two-tier pricing structure for PR 1 that matches the physical barrier at Miradouro da Pedra Rija:

  • €4.50 ticket (Pedra Rija out-and-back): Covers the walk from Pico do Areeiro to Miradouro da Pedra Rija and back to Pico do Areeiro. It does not include continuation to Pico Ruivo, and the FAQ states explicitly that a Pedra Rija ticket cannot be upgraded mid-walk into the full traverse.
  • €10.50 ticket (Full one-way traverse to Pico Ruivo): Covers the complete one-way walk from Pico do Areeiro through Pedra Rija and the west tunnel line to Pico Ruivo. Importantly, the fee FAQ states that this €10.50 ticket also covers PR 1.1 Vereda da Ilha, PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo, and PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada (when PR 1.3 reopens), so you do not need a separate €4.50 ticket to walk out from Pico Ruivo to Achada do Teixeira on PR 1.2.
  • Exemptions: Residents of Madeira, children aged 12 or under, and covered disability cases pay €0 and still require a reservation. Full details are in PR trail fees and reservation rules on Madeira.

Equipment and weather on the central ridge

The western line between Pedra Rija and Pico Ruivo passes through several dark rock tunnels carved through volcanic ridges and climbs steep steel and stone staircases. Carry a reliable headlamp or torch, windproof and warm layers for altitudes above 1,800 m, sufficient water (there are no natural springs along the ridge), and grippy footwear. Remember that a clear webcam or sunny sky in Funchal does not tell you whether PR 1 is open or whether gale winds are sweeping the ridge; check Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo for northern exit notes.
