Pico Ruivo from Achada do Teixeira
PR 1.2 is listed open, 2.8 km each way from Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo. Wind and cloud are a question, not a status on the IFCN table.
PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo is listed open on the IFCN classified-trail table updated on 2 October 2026 and read here on 12 October 2026. The official distance on that table is 2.8 km from Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo and 2.8 km back along the same paved ridge path (5.6 km round trip). No public road reaches the summit of Pico Ruivo; Achada do Teixeira is where the tarmac ends and the walking path begins.
Why weather at Achada do Teixeira differs from the coast
The IFCN table records whether a route is open, partly open, or closed, and gives its official distance. It does not publish a live wind or cloud forecast, and the table omits walking time, elevation gain, and difficulty ratings for PR 1.2. On the ground, however, Achada do Teixeira sits high on the northern spur above Santana, directly exposed to the prevailing northeast trade winds pushing moist air off the Atlantic.
A blue sky over Funchal, Machico, or even lower Santana does not guarantee a clear ridge at the car park:
- Cloud bank build-up: Trade-wind clouds frequently bank against the northern slopes between 1,000 m and 1,600 m by mid-morning. On days with a strong temperature inversion, Achada do Teixeira may sit right at the top of the fog layer while the final climb to Pico Ruivo rises into bright, dry sunshine above a sea of cloud.
- Ridge gale exposure: When an Atlantic front or strong ridge gradient crosses the island, wind accelerates across the bare saddle between Achada do Teixeira and the Pico Ruivo shelter. Gusts on the exposed stone pavement can make standing at the summit trig point difficult and drop the wind-chill temperature sharply within minutes.
- Frost and winter rime: Between late autumn and early spring, overnight temperatures on the high ridge can approach freezing, leaving early-morning frost or slick moisture on the pitched basalt blocks.
Parking and road approach from Santana
Achada do Teixeira is reached by driving up the winding municipal mountain road from Santana via Estrada da Achada do Teixeira. There is no scheduled public bus service to the upper car park, so independent walkers arrive by rental car or local taxi from Santana.
Because PR 1.2 is both the shortest two-way route to Madeira's highest peak and the pickup point for hikers finishing the one-way traverse from Pico do Areeiro, the car park fills rapidly around sunrise and through mid-morning. Park only inside marked bays so emergency vehicles and turnaround taxis can manoeuvre unimpeded.
How PR 1.2 connects with PR 1, PR 1.1, and PR 1.3
Just below the summit cone of Pico Ruivo, four classified routes meet near the mountain refuge:
- PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo: 2.8 km each way to Achada do Teixeira, listed open in both directions.
- PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro: 6.1 km on the table. As detailed in Is PR 1 Madeira open?, PR 1 is open both ways between Pico do Areeiro and Miradouro da Pedra Rija, one-way from Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo on the west tunnel line, and closed on the east line via Pico das Torres. Because the west line is one-way toward Pico Ruivo, walkers who start at Achada do Teixeira cannot use PR 1 to walk south toward Pico do Areeiro.
- PR 1.1 Vereda da Ilha: 8.2 km from Pico Ruivo down to the northern village of Ilha, listed open.
- PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada: 11.2 km on the table, listed open only between Boca das Torrinhas and Encumeada; the high section joining Pico Ruivo to Boca das Torrinhas remains closed on the 2 October 2026 table.
