PR 1.1 Vereda da Ilha is on the IFCN classified-trail table updated on 2 October 2026 and read here on 12 October 2026. The official distance on that table is 8.2 km. The places named there are Pico Ruivo and Ilha. The status on that table is: open. Route Summary: 8.2 km · 3 h 00 min – 3 h 30 min · +50 m / -1,370 m (1,862 m to 490 m) · Hard (Steep Alpine Descent) · Point-to-point transfer required. PR 1.1 is the long northern mountain link between the summit refuge below Pico Ruivo and the rural parish of Ilha in the municipality of Santana. While most hikers visiting Pico Ruivo use the short 2.8 km ridge path to Achada do Teixeira (PR 1.2), PR 1.1 drops all the way from the high alpine heather zone through the Laurissilva forest belt into the deep valley of Ilha.

Point-to-point logistics between Pico Ruivo and Ilha

Because Pico Ruivo has no road access, PR 1.1 never starts or ends at a summit car park on its own:

  • Starting from the top (descent to Ilha): Hikers reach the Pico Ruivo refuge either by walking the 2.8 km approach from Achada do Teixeira on PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo (making 11 km total from Achada do Teixeira to Ilha) or by completing the 6.1 km one-way central ridge traverse from Pico do Areeiro on PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro (making 14.3 km total from Pico do Areeiro to Ilha).
  • Starting from Ilha (uphill from the village): If you park at the lower trailhead in Ilha, you can walk up toward Pico Ruivo and either return to Ilha (16.4 km round trip) or finish at Achada do Teixeira via PR 1.2 if you have arranged a taxi transfer between Ilha and Achada do Teixeira.
  • Transport at Ilha: Ilha is a quiet hillside village reached via municipal roads above Santana and São Jorge. Local bus connections are infrequent, so if you finish your descent in Ilha, pre-arrange a Santana taxi or confirm bus departure times before leaving the summit refuge.

Terrain, footing, and descent demands

Over its 8.2 km length, PR 1.1 transitions across three distinct mountain zones:

  1. Upper alpine ridge: From the Pico Ruivo junction near the Casa de Abrigo, the path descends pitched basalt steps and rocky volcanic soil through high-altitude tree heath (Erica) exposed to northern winds.
  2. Mid-mountain laurel forest: Entering the sheltered forest belt above Lombada das Vacas and Casa de Abrigo das Estrelas, the trail follows earthen and stone-stepped forest tracks where tree roots and shaded stones hold moisture for days after rain.
  3. Lower village approach into Ilha: The final stretch follows steep traditional stone paths and agricultural tracks down into the terraced valley of Ilha.

Because continuous downhill walking over pitched stone steps places heavy load on knees and ankles, trekking poles and boots or trail shoes with firm toe protection and wet-rock grip are strongly recommended.

Before you go: €4.50 vs €10.50 fee rules

The IFCN fee FAQ lists two ways PR 1.1 is covered:

  • Standalone PR 1.1 reservation (€4.50): Walking PR 1.1 on its own carries the standard €4.50 classified-route fee for non-residents aged 13 and older.
  • Included in the €10.50 full PR 1 traverse ticket: The fee FAQ states that the €10.50 ticket for the full one-way traverse from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo also covers PR 1.1, PR 1.2, and PR 1.3 (when open), whereas a €4.50 ticket that only goes to Miradouro da Pedra Rija on PR 1 is not upgraded into the full route.

Before starting the steep descent from Pico Ruivo into the parish of Ilha (or climbing up from Ilha toward the summit refuge), confirm your return transport in Santana and book your time slot. Residents of Madeira, children aged 12 or under, and covered disability cases pay €0 and still need a reservation; see PR trail fees and reservation rules on Madeira. This site does not publish a live forecast. Source: Percursos pedestres classificados, table updated 2 October 2026, read here on 12 October 2026. The fee figures are from the IFCN fee FAQ.
