PR 15 Vereda da Ribeira da Janela is on the IFCN classified-trail table verified on 25 October 2026. The official distance is 2.7 km. The places named there are Curral Falso and Ribeira da Janela. The status on that table is: caution, with the route open but subject to a temporary field hazard advisory following reports on 23 October 2026 of an active, aggressive ground wasp nest at the first road crossing ascending from Ribeira da Janela toward Curral Falso. Route Summary: 2.7 km · 1 h 15 min – 1 h 45 min · +20 m / -460 m (840 m to 400 m) · Moderate (Steep Descent) · Point-to-point transfer required. Do not confuse this classified route with the separate unclassified walk indexed at Levada da Ribeira da Janela on the unknown trails page. PR 15 is not a levada walk through tunnels; it is a steep, historic stone-paved mountain footpath (vereda) descending from Curral Falso on the ER 209 plateau road down into the agricultural terraces and parish of Ribeira da Janela near the north coast.
Point-to-point logistics between Curral Falso and Ribeira da Janela
Although only 2.7 km one-way on the table, PR 15 drops steeply down the valley wall between the Curral Falso forestry post on the ER 209 (around 820 m) and the village of Ribeira da Janela:
- Direction of travel: Most walkers hike PR 15 downhill from Curral Falso to Ribeira da Janela, either on its own or as the final leg after PR 14 Levada dos Cedros (7.2 km from Fanal to Curral Falso).
- Out-and-back vs. taxi return: If you leave a rental car at the Curral Falso roadside bays on the ER 209, walking back up the 2.7 km cobbled staircase from Ribeira da Janela is a sustained uphill workout (5.4 km round trip). Alternatively, you can take a short taxi ride from Ribeira da Janela or neighboring Porto Moniz back up the ER 209 to Curral Falso.
- Public transport: Northern coastal buses serving Porto Moniz and Seixal pass through lower Ribeira da Janela, whereas no scheduled bus climbs the ER 209 to Curral Falso.
Historic timber trail, steps, and footing
For generations before the ER 209 road was built, locals used the Vereda da Ribeira da Janela to carry timber, firewood, and livestock between the coastal terraces and the high forest:
- Active ground wasp advisory (October 2026): On 23 October 2026, an active ground wasp nest was reported in the earthen embankment immediately beside the first road crossing ascending from Ribeira da Janela toward Curral Falso. Hikers with known venom allergies must carry antihistamines or epinephrine auto-injectors, move past road crossing verges without disturbing ground foliage, and keep companion dogs on a short leash.
- Continuous stone steps: Much of the 2.7 km route consists of traditional pitched basalt steps and wooden log risers winding under Laurissilva canopy and eucalyptus groves before emerging among old stone haylofts (palheiros) and terraced gardens watered by the local poios.
- Wet stone caution: Shaded stone cobbles become very slick after northern showers. Trekking poles and footwear with strong wet-rock traction help protect knees on the steep descent.
