PR 11 is listed open, 1.5 km each way from Ribeiro Frio to Balcões, on the IFCN table of 2 October 2026. The table does not mention a board repair.

PR 11 Vereda dos Balcões is listed open on the IFCN classified-trail table updated on 2 October 2026 and read here on 12 October 2026. The official distance on that table is 1.5 km from Ribeiro Frio to the Balcões viewpoint and 1.5 km back along the same path (3 km round trip).

An earlier sample draft at this URL mentioned a specific wooden-board repair notice. The 2 October 2026 IFCN table does not mention any board work or restriction on PR 11; it simply lists the route as open. The URL is preserved so existing bookmarks and links continue to resolve, while the text here reflects only the verified table status and practical trailhead logistics at Ribeiro Frio.

What to expect on the 1.5 km walk from Ribeiro Frio

PR 11 is one of the shortest classified walks on Madeira and follows the historic Levada da Serra do Faial from the roadside at Ribeiro Frio out to the rock promontory of Miradouro dos Balcões. Because the path stays beside the water channel through mature Laurissilva forest, the gradient is gentle and steady in both directions.

At the end of the 1.5 km outward leg, the forest opens onto a natural balcony overlooking the deep valley of the Ribeira da Metade. On clear mornings before valley cloud rises from the north coast, the viewpoint frames the central mountain wall of the island, including Pico do Areeiro, Pico das Torres, and Pico Ruivo. Even when low cloud fills the head of the valley, the forested levada corridor itself remains sheltered from strong ridge winds.

Parking and bus access at Ribeiro Frio

Ribeiro Frio sits in a narrow mountain ravine along the ER 103 regional road between Poiso and Santana. Unlike high-plateau trailheads such as Achada do Teixeira or Pico do Areeiro, there is no large off-road car park at Ribeiro Frio. Vehicles park in limited roadside bays along the ER 103 near the trout nursery, restaurant buildings, and trailhead signboards.

  • Arrival timing: By mid-morning, tour coaches, taxis, and rental cars visiting both PR 11 and PR 10 quickly fill the roadside spaces. Arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon avoids the heaviest congestion in the ravine.
  • Public bus option: Regular intercity buses operating between Funchal, Poiso, Ribeiro Frio, Santana, and Faial stop directly on the ER 103 at Ribeiro Frio, making PR 11 one of the easiest classified walks on the island to reach without a car.
  • Road safety: When walking between your parked car or bus stop and the PR 11 entrance gate, stay alert for traffic rounding the blind bends of the ER 103.

Pairing PR 11 with PR 10 or PR 9

Ribeiro Frio is also the western starting point for PR 10 Levada do Furado, which is listed open on the 2 October 2026 table at 11 km one-way from Ribeiro Frio to Portela. Note the logistical difference before combining them:

  • PR 11 is out-and-back (1.5 km each way): You return directly to Ribeiro Frio where your car is parked.
  • PR 10 is point-to-point (11 km to Portela): Finishing at Portela leaves you at a different road junction above Machico and Porto da Cruz, requiring a taxi or bus connection if you left a rental car at Ribeiro Frio.
  • Separate reservations: On the IFCN classified table, PR 11 and PR 10 are separate routes with separate PR numbers. Under the IFCN fee FAQ, each classified route other than PR 1 carries a €4.50 per-person fee for non-residents aged 13 and over, and residents or children aged 12 and under still require a reservation. See PR trail fees and reservation rules on Madeira and What to carry on a levada before setting out.
